Full history
Built to be independent
Blue Ctrl grew out of Ulstein Group’s decision to own and control its own automation technology rather than rely on third-party software. What started as project-based development evolved into a dedicated product company, based in Ålesund and built around one platform: X‑CONNECT®.
System integration as the starting point
Automation became part of Ulstein through the acquisition of Nordvestconsult Electrical Engineering in 2002, an automation and electrical engineering company based in Ålesund. Ulstein designs and builds vessels, and a significant part of its work involves integrating a wide range of products and systems from suppliers into one seamless operating environment.
Although the automation system represents only a small portion of a vessel's total value, it is critical in the integration process. This is where automation became strategically important for Ulstein. The key question was whether to continue building third-party software that did not fully meet the company's requirements, or to take ownership of the technology itself. Ulstein chose to take ownership of the technology.
From project to product
For many years, the automation team operated within a project-oriented organisation. Each new vessel project required the team to develop and adapt solutions specifically for that project, so the focus was on project-based development rather than on building a standardised product.
This made it difficult to create a scalable platform, and it led to a fundamental realisation: to increase reuse and reduce unit costs, the organisation needed to become product-oriented rather than project-oriented. That insight continues to shape the way Blue Ctrl operates today.
The platform decision
The establishment of Blue Ctrl
In 2018, Blue Ctrl was established as an independent company. This separation was far more than a cosmetic organisational change. To achieve credible growth, the platform needed to be adopted by shipyards, system integrators, and customers beyond the Ulstein ecosystem.
To accomplish this credibly, it was necessary to create distance from Ulstein’s own system integration business. Independence was therefore a deliberate strategic choice rather than an attribute added later.
The same year, BLUE BOX™ emerged as a solution for data acquisition and decision support. Initially developed as a complementary product, it has become increasingly relevant as the value of high-quality operational vessel data continues to grow.
Building market acceptance
The most compelling validation comes from customers who choose the platform on their own merits. Leading vessel owners have adopted X‑CONNECT® as a core part of their fleet digitalisation, and some of the industry’s foremost ship design companies, including direct competitors of Ulstein’s own ship design business, have selected Blue Ctrl for their automation deliveries. When competitors choose your solution, that is the strongest possible endorsement of its value. New strategic system integrators have since joined the partner network, extending the platform’s reach well beyond where it began
The next chapter
The technology foundation is in place. The challenge ahead is scaling the business.
Blue Ctrl is focused on strengthening its position within the broader maritime ecosystem, connecting more closely with navigation systems, decision-support applications and autonomous operations, and establishing automation as a core component of vessel deliveries rather than an optional add-on.
